Rennajj Fish Farm

Eden’s main conservation project

Overview

Rennajj Fish Farm is a comparatively small area of well demarcated privately owned land, covering 80 hectares. It is on the fringes of the Jos metropolis, and suburban development is currently proceeding close to about half of the farm perimeter. The most significant habitat there is wetland. It regularly holds numerous species of herons and waders, whilst gulls, terns and Ospreys Pandion haliaetus are occasional visitors. Other raptors frequently present are the Western Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus and Marsh Owl Asio capensis. It is also the only known site in the country for the Locust Finch Paludipasser locustella, which bred there some years back but has not been seen recently. There are also acacia trees and open areas which provide habitat for several Sudan Savannah bird species not commonly seen this far south. Appropriate management and protection of the area could potentially increase species diversity considerably.
